Elliot] I prefer this to the normal Animal Upon Animal, because the normal Animal Upon Animal is REALLY hard! I tried 2-player game with one of my kids, and then with both kids as I watched, and it’s not a lot of fun. This strategy got a bit darker in our plays as my kids purposely placed animals as to make the next player collapse the stack and most of this was directed at me (I taught them well). These kid pleasing details are etched into the animal, which helps little fingers grip and each animal comes with a smile. Each turn a player rolls the die and either places one or two animals on to the stack of animals, passes one of his or her animals to another player for them to place, or places an animal on the table, extending the base for other players to build upon.

The pieces are nice and chunky, the rules are simple, and the whole thing kind of is easy to pick up and play. on one side of the die there’s a 2 and so players can choose TWO of their animals to stack on the crocodile. As with the other game mode, take a sun tile if no animals fell down, and whoever has the most sun tiles at the end of the game wins.We have a house rule which my kids think is a blast because we actually do an animal draft with a 3-player game and we always use this rule with this player count. Most people suspect the snake is the foulest to play, but it’s mostly flat, just bendy in unexpected places (it can nicely sit on top of another snake, for instance).

A few years ago, our friend Chrissy wrote about how Animal Upon Animal teaches physics; kids will start to place an animal, then stop and think about other ways to place it that might work better. While I don’t think Animal Upon Animal is a great 2-player game, I do think it’s a great game that excels at kids having fun while they learn. The experienced player version can take a decent amount of time, since so few animals are removed from play. Please note these are estimated transit times and are based on deliveries between major gateway cities. Almost all of the reviews on Board Game Quest are from review copies of a game provided by the publisher.

Just like HABA’s other My Very First Games, the rule book suggests lots of different ways to play, starting with letting your toddler freely play with the pieces, maybe naming what some animals are and trying to fit them together in different ways.By the third play he finally understood the finesse needed (mainly because he was not winning) and you’d thought he was handling Faberge eggs.

All the animal tokens are all of a unique shape and color, wooden, and have kid appropriate details to each animal. Each turn players will roll the die once and then place or pass their animal tokens on the starting base crocodile. Gather the family and see how high you can stack all sorts of animals in this dexterity game by HABA. Dexterity games for this age can be a great way to help kids develop those softer, more controlled movements. And if they roll the hand, then they get to force someone else to place the animal for them (with the change of making the animals fall). Unlike Catch the Moon, there aren’t any clever positions you can really create to start building braces for future structures. No sooner has the frog hopped onto the back of the kangaroo than the hedgehog gets ready to jump up and join him. A game of Animal Upon Animal takes just a few minutes and we can often play 2-3 times before Rowan’s attention starts drifting. As a family-owned business operating worldwide, HABA has been accompanying children on all their forays for 80 years - with high quality games and toys that challenge, encourage and above all are a lot of fun!
