The theme of inclusion and the value of forming friendships with those who are different from us is a valuable lesson for young readers. Axel went on from school to study History of Art at the University of Hamburg – but he didn’t like the course and decided to leave.

Axel Scheffler is a star illustrator whose instantly recognizable, warm and witty illustrations have achieved worldwide acclaim and numerous awards. We work separately – he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow – but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. My novel The Giants and the Joneses is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic Princess Mirror-Belle who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old.

A very funny story of quick wits and friendship, Room on the Broom is another smash hit from the unparalleled picture book partnership of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. The repetition and rhyming text in the book also make it engaging and enjoyable to read aloud, which can be beneficial for young children's language development. Axel is the illustrator of wonderful novelty, gift and poetry books for Macmillan, such as Fish Who Dream of Trees (Two Hoots) and the bestselling The Bedtime Bear , The Tickle Book and Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes - and of course, he is the illustrator of some of the world's best-loved picture books, including modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child , which together have sold over 17 million copies worldwide.

The book was also made into a play by Tall Stories and into an animated film by Magic Light, which was shown on BBC TV at Christmas 2012.The Room on the Broom story follows a very kind witch and her cat on their travels as they ride on the broomstick and zoom about the place. From soft toys to games, all the way through to personalised lunch boxes, mugs, cushions, and even more. The witch and her cat fly happily over forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick until a stormy wind blows away the witch's hat, bow and wand.

Room on the Broom" is a well-crafted and heartwarming children's book that combines a valuable message of inclusion with engaging storytelling and delightful artwork. The witch and her cat fly happily over forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand.

More about Julia: “I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Further books illustrated by Axel include Room on the Broom, Stick Man, Zog and The Smeds and the Smoos – all of which have been made into much-loved animated films by Magic Light Pictures. Her other books include The Hospital Dog illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, The Christmas Pine illustrated by Victoria Sandøy and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures illustrated by Lydia Monks. uk will use the information you provide on this form to be in touch with you and to provide updates and marketing.
